God = Rest Area (Part 5, Chapter 10)

Part 5, Chapter 10

Traveling can be fun and stressful at the same time.  Sometimes we are traveling and we just need a break.  We see a sign for a rest area ahead, and so we stop.  These can be good areas to take a nap, get out and walk and just give our minds a break from driving.  We do this so that we can keep on journeying.

John Michael Talbot, the singer and song writer, wrote these lyrics: “Only in God is my soul at rest, in Him is my Salvation.”  God is our place of rest.  Why? Because He made us, He gave us our eternal soul.  As St. Augustine said, “Our hearts are restless, until they rest in Thee.”  It is not the created thing that will bring our souls rest.  “When the heart of man seeks the creature, it goes to work eagerly, expecting to satisfy its cravings; but directly it obtains what it sought, it finds a blank, and dissatisfied, begins to seek anew; for God will not suffer our hearts to find any rest…until it returns to God, whence it came” (Introduction to the Devout Life, 198).  People, things, honors and all other created things are not going to fill us with peace; only in God is our rest area.

Seek God alone.  Seek the One who is Eternal and seek what He alone can give.  He is where the journey begins and ends.
